The City of Grand Junction is continuing to improve dog parks available in the city. Currently, the only dog parks available in city limits are located within Canyon View Park.
The small/senior dog park at Canyon View Park will be closed for renovation starting on Monday, June 22, 2020 and will reopen July 1, 2021 or when the grass is established. The remainder of the Canyon View dog park will remain open for use. Dog Tuff™ Turf Grass will be installed as part of these renovations. This type of grass is derived from African grasses similar to American buffalo grass but holds up better to wear and tear. The grass is a sterile hybrid so it cannot reseed into the native environment and become an invasive weed. Dog Tuff™ Turf is drought tolerant, resistant to dog urine, prefers full sun, grows on dry slopes, it does not wear thin in the winter like buffalo grass and it recovers from excessive foot traffic quickly.
Crews will be installing a temporary above ground irrigation system to help establish the new turf over the year-long establishment period. The two other dog parks and drinking fountains will be available during the closure of the small/senior dog area. This project will use surplus turn plugs leftover from a project at Las Colonias Park.
A second set of dog parks is in the final phase of development at Las Colonias Park and a portion will open in July of this year. This will allow for additional opportunities for dog owners during the closure. Two thirds of the Las Colonias Dog Park were also planted with Dog Tuff™ Turf and will open in the summer of 2021.
The City of Grand Junction requires dogs be leashed unless in a dog park. Picking up pet waste is also required, and the Parks & Recreation Department makes dog bags widely available throughout the 36 developed parks in our community.
