Downtown parking was made free in early March as part of the City’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, compliance operations still occurred for designations such as handicapped spaces, fire lanes, and loading zones. Downtown Grand Junction also requested that certain parking spaces be identified as “pick-up” zones for patrons. The goal was to support the local businesses and restaurants in the area by driving customers down to enjoy the amenities, while not having to worry about parking. The downtown area was not built to accommodate pick-up parking spots. As a result, the City had to make modifications to support the request.
As of June 8, 2020, parking compliance operations will resume in the downtown area for all locations. Additional pickup locations have been added to existing zones. The goal of resuming parking operations is to support the local businesses and restaurants by enforcing compliance in the downtown the area and encouraging frequent turnover for downtown parking spaces. Compliance in the designated pickup locations will also be enforced, allowing for customers to pick up to-go orders easier.
The City of Grand Junction has ample parking for its downtown patrons with over 1,000 meters, 180 time-limited parking spaces and the parking garage located in the 400 block of Rood Avenue. The parking garage has 448 parking spaces; 126 of those spaces are available for short-term/daily public parking, and the remaining spaces are being used for long-term leased parking.
