Cancelled events at the Stadium due to COVID-19 has allowed the City to accelerate the schedule to replace the track. The track will be closed starting Monday, April 20 and construction is scheduled to proceed until mid to late May. After completion, the facility will be reopened.
The Stocker Stadium Track was originally installed in 2002 and repainted in 2013. The Track surface has far exceeded its life expectancy. The track is showing significant wear, de-laminating from the asphalt surface and, in few places, the asphalt is heaving and cracking. Currently the track hosts all School District 51 high school and middle school track events and practices, Colorado Mesa University Track events and practices, Graduations, Special Olympics local and state games, and is open to the public Monday through Friday for general use. With over 90 organized track events per season, plus 5 days a week of public use, the track is a highly utilized amenity of Lincoln Park.
In addition to the City of Grand Junction, funding for this project has come from stadium partners including School District #51 and the Parks Improvement Advisory Board, which is comprised of the City of Grand Junction, Colorado Mesa University, JUCO, Mesa County and School District 5130.
