The Grand Junction Urban Trails Committee will host the third annual Grand Junction Community Streets Event on Saturday, October 19th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 10th Street will be closed to non-local vehicular traffic from the Alley between North Avenue and Belford to Grand Avenue.
Activities will be offered along the 10th Street route and at Washington Park. A bike rodeo, food trucks, music, entertainment, lawn games, and informational booths will be arrayed along the street, free and open to the public.
No motorized traffic will be allowed on the street during the event, though Grand and Gunnison Avenues will be open to cross-traffic along where they intersect with 10th Street.
There are more than 70 Community Streets events each year in the United States which trace their origins to the first event in Seattle in 1965. Community Open Streets events temporarily close a street to motorized traffic, allowing the street to be used for other activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, or dancing.
Community Streets are part of broad efforts to promote and extend the many health and other benefits associated with active transportation by providing a space for residents to be physically active and to have fun safely. The event encourages participants to learn how to incorporate biking walking, and other active transportation choices into their everyday lives.
The Grand Junction event also highlights the important active transportation connection between the Colorado Mesa University campus and Downtown.
