Long-Time Director of City’s Human Resources Department Announces Retirement

HazelhurstClaudiaCity of Grand Junction Human Resources Director Claudia Hazelhurst has announced she will be retiring after more than 44 years with the organization, capping one of the longest tenured careers the City has ever seen.

Claudia first joined the City in February, 1975. Her position upon hire was Personnel Aide and was funded through a State grant. In 1976, her position transitioned to Administrative Aide and became City-funded. Upon the resignation of the Personnel Director in late 1976, Claudia was appointed to serve in the interim role and was promoted into the permanent role in 1977. She has held the position since that time, although the title has changed.

During her tenure, Hazelhurst has represented the City of Grand Junction on the United Way Board of Directors on which she served as VP of Board Development and Board President, and the Western Slope Center for Children (The Center) Board of Directors.

In reflecting on her career, Claudia noted, “I’ve been so fortunate to have spent my career serving my community alongside others who have chosen the same path of public service. I have a great deal of pride in having played a small part in ensuring the City employed the very best talent available to serve this community. Our employees, from our leaders to our line employees, are a remarkably talented, dedicated and generous group of public servants whose professional and personal contributions and sacrifices go largely unnoticed or uncelebrated. That’s how they would want it in that service to others is what drives them and is its own reward. I’ll miss being able to call myself one among them.”

City Manager Greg Caton added, “It’s hard to even quantify the contribution Claudia has made to our organization over such a lengthy career. Her compassion and advocacy for the people working here is amazing. Virtually every employee who has ever walked through our doors has known her, and she knows each of them by name. The institutional knowledge she will take with her is significant and her presence here will be very missed. I know I speak for the organization in wishing Claudia an extremely well-earned and fulfilling retirement.”

Claudia’s retirement is slated to become effective in April.
