If you have ever considered running for City Council, now may be your chance. Beginning December 28, nomination petitions will be available online or in the City Clerk’s Office at 250 North 5th Street. In order to qualify as a candidate, you must collect the signatures of at least 50 valid registered Grand Junction voters and return the nomination petition to the City Clerk’s office by 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2019. Collection of signatures must not commence prior to January 1, 2019.
Three seats on the City Council will be opening this spring: District B, District C and one At Large seat. All seats are four-year terms. The District B seat is currently held by Councilmember/Mayor Barbara Traylor Smith who is term limited, the District C seat is currently held by Councilmember/Mayor Pro Tem Bennett Boeschenstein who is term limited, and the At Large seat is currently held by Councilmember Chris Kennedy. A map outlining all Council Districts can be found here.
In order to qualify to run for a City Council seat you must be at least 18 years of age, be a registered Grand Junction voter and have lived in the city limits for twelve consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election. At Large candidates may live anywhere within the city limits; District B and C candidates must have lived within the boundaries of those districts for the preceding twelve months. City Council elections are non-partisan so you do not have to be affiliated with a political party to run.
The election will take place on April 2 and will be conducted by mail-in ballot only. Only registered voters living in the city limits are eligible to vote in the City Council race. To determine if you are registered to vote, visit the Mesa County Clerk’s website.
