Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department and the Grand Junction Forestry Board will celebrate Kids to Parks Day on May 19 at Hawthorne Park from 9:00am – 11:00am.
This national day of play, celebrated every third Saturday of May, connects kids and families with their local parks and helps community members to embrace their role as park stewards.
This year’s inaugural event will be held at Hawthorne Park, one of Grand Junction’s oldest parks. Many of the park’s trees have declined in health recently, so much so, eight of them have been removed. A new design of the southwest corner of the park along with new cultural and irrigation practices will support more opportunities for increased neighborhood and community use.
The community is invited to help plant 15 – 20 new trees to support the park’s new design. Bring gloves and shovels if you have them! Light refreshments will be served, and Einstein Bros. will be providing bagels. Mesa County Library District’s Bike Library will also be on hand for book breaks.
