New Community Development Director to Join City of Grand Junction Team

TamraAllenThe City of Grand Junction will be joined by a new Community Development Director soon. Tamra Allen has been appointed to the position by City Manager Greg Caton and she will be joining the organization on April 26. Ms. Allen was one of 68 individuals who applied for the position and took part in a multi-panel assessment process.

The Community Development Department has not had a director since 2006. In fall 2016, a staffing reduction and reorganization was implemented in the department as part of a Citywide measure to address revenue shortfalls. At that time, plans were made to re-incorporate the Director position into the department’s staffing model in the first quarter of this year in an effort to solidify the department.

The Community Development Director plans, directs, manages and oversees the operations of the department which includes community planning, development services, zoning, historic preservation, and economic development.

Ms. Allen comes from Garfield County where she has been the Planning Manager since 2012. She served as Senior Planner for three years prior to being appointed Planning Manager.  She also served as the Interim/Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Pagosa Springs for one year, Director of Planning for Pagosa Springs for four years and Town Planner for two years.

City Manager Greg Caton states, “I am looking forward to having Tamra on board to help shape and lead our planning and development efforts. This position, which has been vacant for some time, is an important one, especially as our community continues to recover from a slowed economy. Tamra’s experience and energy made her an outstanding candidate for this position and we are excited to have her join us.”

Tamra holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration/Political Science from CU Denver, is an accredited planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners and holds an accompanying degree in Urban Planning from Arizona State University.
